Motorcycle Key Replacement
Shrewsbury

A bike key is not a small car key. The chip has to be coded through a part that moves from model to model, which is why most car locksmiths say no. William Church is a mobile auto locksmith. He does motorcycle key replacement in Shrewsbury, and he checks your make, model and year before promising anything.

Mechanical Bike KeyOlder bikes and scooters use a cut blade alone. No coding, no chip, and the cheapest job here.
Transponder KeyHonda HISS, Suzuki SAIS, Yamaha and Kawasaki systems all need the chip coded to the bike.
Spare Bike KeyMade while the first key still works. One key on a bike is one bad day from a recovery truck.
All Keys LostNothing left to copy, so the code comes from the bike. A longer job on almost every model.

William Church Does The Work Himself

Bike work rewards care. Panels come off to reach the part that holds the code. A bike left half apart on a driveway is nobody's idea of a good afternoon. William Church has spent more than 10 years in auto electronics, and he does this work himself rather than passing it on.

He is DBS checked and carries £1 million of public liability cover. WAC is SERMI registered, the Europe-wide scheme that lets approved independents reach manufacturer security data. That access matters as much on a bike as it does on a car.

The service is mobile. A bike with no key cannot be ridden anywhere, so the van comes to the garage, the driveway or wherever it is standing.

Motorcycle Key Replacement Shrewsbury

Why Bike Keys Are Not Car Keys

On a car, the diagnostic port sits under the dashboard and almost every key job starts there. A motorcycle has no such standard. The chip data lives in a different component depending on the model, and reaching it usually means taking bodywork off first.

On most bikes it is the ECU or CDI unit. On some, such as the Yamaha R1, the aerial antenna around the ignition is the way in. Heavier sports bikes from KTM, Ducati and Aprilia can need the dashboard or speedometer unit. Some Vespa models are done through the throttle body.

That is why nobody honest promises to do every bike. Send the make, model and year and you get a straight yes or no before anyone travels. If every key has gone the route changes again, and that route is covered further down this page.

Motorcycle Key Jobs WAC Carries Out

Which of these applies depends on the bike and on whether a working key still exists. Both questions get answered on the phone rather than on arrival.

Mechanical Bike Key

Older bikes and many scooters use a plain cut blade. No chip and no coding, so this is the quickest job on the page.

Transponder Key

The chip has to be coded to the bike. Honda HISS, Suzuki SAIS, Yamaha and Kawasaki systems all work this way.

Spare Bike Key

Cut and coded while the first key still works. It costs a fraction of the same key ordered after the original is gone.

All Keys Lost

Nothing left to copy, so the code is read from the bike itself. Expect bodywork off and a longer visit.

Key Or Ignition Fault

A key that will not turn is often the lock, not the key. That gets checked before anything is cut.

Professional Capability

The Systems A Bike Job Touches

Seven programming platforms travel in the van, and they cover car, van and bike systems. That range is what makes a motorcycle job possible at all, because a car-only tool will not reach a bike immobiliser and a single platform will not cover every manufacturer.

Reaching manufacturer security data legally is the other half of it. WAC is registered under the scheme that governs that, and the official detail sits at Official SERMI UK information.

Key Cutting

Blades are cut to the lock on site. This suits bikes and scooters that use a mechanical key with no chip.

Honda HISS

The Honda Ignition Security System. The chip in the key is coded to the bike before the engine will run.

Suzuki SAIS

The Suzuki Advanced Immobiliser System. It is handled the same way, through the bike's own control unit.

Yamaha And Kawasaki

Both run their own transponder immobilisers. On some Yamaha models the aerial antenna is the access point.

ECU And CDI Work

On most bikes the code sits in the ECU or CDI unit, which means bodywork off before anything is written.

Dash And Speedo Units

KTM, Ducati and Aprilia models can hold the data in the dashboard or speedometer rather than the ECU.

All Keys Lost

With no key to copy, the code is read from the bike. Longer than a spare, and not supported on every model.

Mobile Service

A bike with no key cannot be ridden anywhere. The work happens at the garage, the driveway or the yard, wherever it stands.

Why the Detail Matters

A Stolen Bike Is Less Likely To Return

The theft numbers are better than they were. The Motorcycle Industry Association reported motorcycle theft down 7.9% year on year across the first eight months of 2024, well below where it stood in 2017. That is the good half of the story.

The other half is recovery. The same report flagged that the volume of stolen motorcycles recovered after theft has dropped sharply, which suggests more are being shipped abroad. Fewer bikes are taken, but a bike that goes is now less likely to come back at all.

That changes what is worth doing. A second key costs little and removes the recovery truck from the picture. Where a bike is valuable or kept outside, a vehicle tracking system is the part that helps once it has already gone.

How the Service Works

How A Bike Key Job Runs

1

Send the details

Make, model and year, and whether any key still works.

2

Get a straight answer

William says whether your bike is supported before anyone travels.

3

Get a price

The quote is on that model, not a range that may not apply.

4

Cut and code

Panels come off where needed, the key is coded, and everything goes back on.

5

Test it

The bike is started on the new key before he leaves.

Common Situations

Five Ways Riders End Up Here

Only Key Lost

The most common call. With nothing to copy, the code has to come out of the bike itself.

Bought With One Key

Very common on a used bike. Adding the spare now is far cheaper than adding it later.

Worn Blade Sticking

A blade wears down before it snaps. Replacing it early avoids an extraction job in a car park.

Chip Not Recognised

The bike cranks but will not fire, or the immobiliser light stays on. Often the chip, sometimes the reader.

Key Will Not Turn

Frequently the ignition lock rather than the key. Worth checking before a new key is cut.

Clear Pricing Factors

What Changes The Price Of A Bike Key

Bike keys are priced on the model, and there is a reason for that. Two bikes of the same age can need completely different work, because the code sits in a different part and one needs more bodywork off than the other. A published range would be guesswork.

For a rough sense of scale, the 2026 Checkatrade guide puts a car transponder key at £240 and a remote key at £320, with £240 as the UK average across car key types. Those are car figures, quoted as a reference point rather than a bike price. A mechanical bike blade sits below them. An all keys lost job on a modern bike sits above. A main dealer is usually dearer again, because the bike has to be recovered in first.

Send the make, model and year and you get an exact figure for your bike before anyone travels. Asking costs nothing, and if the bike is not supported you are told that rather than sold a visit. Car figures by key type sit on the car key replacement cost page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Motorcycle Key Replacement FAQs

Why can a car locksmith not do my motorcycle?
Because a bike has no standard diagnostic port to work through. On a car, almost every key job starts at the socket under the dashboard. On a motorcycle the chip data sits in a different component depending on the model, usually the ECU or CDI unit, and reaching it means taking bodywork off first. A car-only tool cannot get there, which is why most firms turn bike work away.
Which motorcycle immobiliser systems can you work with?
The common transponder systems, including Honda HISS, the Honda Ignition Security System, and Suzuki SAIS, the Suzuki Advanced Immobiliser System. Yamaha and Kawasaki both run their own transponder immobilisers as well. Support still depends on the exact model and year rather than the badge, so send those and you get a straight answer before anyone travels.
Do all motorcycle keys need programming?
No. Older bikes and many scooters use a plain mechanical blade with no chip in it, and those are cut and handed over with nothing to code. Anything with a factory immobiliser needs the chip coded to the bike before the engine will run. The make, model and year decide which of the two you have.
Can you make a bike key when every key is lost?
On many bikes, yes, but not on all of them and it is a longer job. With no key to copy, the code has to be read from the machine itself, which usually means bodywork off to reach the ECU, the dashboard or the aerial antenna. On some models it is not supported at all, and you are told that on the phone rather than after a wasted visit. Proof of ownership is checked on the day, so keep the V5C logbook and photo identification to hand.
Where does the code actually sit on a motorcycle?
It depends on the model, and that is the whole reason bike work is quoted individually. On most bikes it is the ECU or CDI unit. On some, such as the Yamaha R1, it is the aerial antenna around the ignition. Heavier sports bikes from KTM, Ducati and Aprilia can hold it in the dashboard or speedometer unit, and some Vespa models are done through the throttle body.
How much does a motorcycle key cost?
It is priced on the model rather than from a list, because two bikes of the same age can need very different work. For scale, the 2026 Checkatrade guide puts a car transponder key at £240 and a remote key at £320, with £240 as the UK average for car keys. Those are car figures given as a reference. A mechanical bike blade sits below them and an all keys lost job on a modern bike sits above. Send the model for an exact figure.
My key turns but the bike will not start. Is that the key?
Sometimes, and sometimes not. If the immobiliser light stays on or the bike cranks without firing, the chip or the reader around the ignition is the likely cause. If the key will not turn at all, the ignition lock is more often the problem than the key. Both get checked before anything is cut, because replacing the wrong part costs you money and fixes nothing.
Is it worth having a spare bike key made?
Yes, and it is the cheapest thing on this page by a wide margin. A spare cut while the original still works is copied rather than read out of the bike, so there is no bodywork and no long visit. It also matters more than it used to: the Motorcycle Industry Association reported theft down 7.9% year on year in 2024, but also that far fewer stolen bikes are being recovered.
