Today's thieves work quietly, electronically, and fast — often taking a car from a driveway in under sixty seconds without breaking anything at all.

First: Understand How Cars Are Actually Stolen Now

Relay theft — the dominant method

Your keyless fob broadcasts a low-power signal continuously, even sitting on a hall table. The vehicle believes the key is present. Doors unlock, engine starts, car drives away.

Nothing is broken. No alarm sounds. There is often no evidence at all until you look out of the window in the morning and the driveway is empty. It typically takes under a minute.

OBD port key cloning

The thief gains entry to the vehicle — sometimes by relay, sometimes by other means — plugs a programming device into the diagnostic port under the dashboard, and programmes a blank key to the vehicle in a couple of minutes. They now have a fully functional key and can return whenever they choose.

CAN bus injection

A newer and more sophisticated approach where the thief accesses vehicle wiring, often through a headlight housing or wing mirror, and sends fabricated messages onto the vehicle's internal network instructing it to unlock and start. It bypasses the key entirely.

The common thread

Every one of these methods defeats the factory security by convincing the vehicle that a legitimate key is present. None of them involves force. Which is precisely why a louder alarm or a steering lock does very little against them.

What a Ghost Immobiliser Is and How It Works

  • There is a service mode. You can temporarily disable it for garage visits or valet parking without giving away your sequence.

There is one thing a Ghost does not do: it does not tell you where your car is. If a vehicle is lifted onto a flatbed and driven away without ever being started, a Ghost does not help you find it. That is the gap a tracker fills.

What a GPS Tracker Is and How It Works

A tracker is a small device installed in the vehicle that reports its position using GPS satellites and transmits that position over the mobile network to a monitoring platform or an app on your phone.

What it gives you

  • Live location. Where the vehicle is, right now, on a map.
  • Movement alerts. Notification if the vehicle moves when it should not be moving.
  • Journey history. Where it has been, useful for business mileage and fleet management.
  • Recovery support. On monitored systems, a control centre that liaises directly with police to coordinate recovery.
  • Driver behaviour data. On business-focused systems, speed and harsh-braking reporting.

Where trackers have limits

A tracker is fundamentally reactive. It does not prevent anything — the car still gets stolen. It simply improves the odds of getting it back. Determined and well-equipped thieves may attempt to locate and remove a tracker, or use signal jammers, though better systems are designed to resist both. And most trackers involve an ongoing subscription for the monitoring service.

There is also the practical reality that recovery is not the same as no loss. Even a recovered vehicle may come back damaged, stripped, or after weeks in police storage.

Thatcham Research is the UK motor insurance industry's testing body. It assesses vehicle security products and classifies them under recognised categories, and most major insurers use those classifications when assessing risk.

For trackers, Thatcham approval is often the deciding factor in whether an insurer recognises the device at all — and on higher-value vehicles, some policies require an approved tracker as a condition of cover. Fitting a non-approved device may satisfy you but not your insurer.

Whichever you fit, tell your insurer. An undeclared security device earns you nothing, and in some cases undeclared modifications can complicate a claim. A quick call or note on your policy is all it takes, and it may reduce your premium.

Myth: my car already has an immobiliser from the factory

It does — and relay theft defeats it entirely. The factory immobiliser is designed to verify that a legitimate key is present. Relay theft works by convincing it that one is. The factory system is doing exactly what it was designed to do; the attack simply sidesteps it.

Myth: a signal-blocking pouch is enough

A Faraday pouch is genuinely worth using and costs very little — but it only works if everyone in the household uses it every single time, for every key, including the spare in the kitchen drawer. One lapse is all it takes. Treat it as a useful habit, not a security system.

Myth: thieves are not interested in ordinary cars

Some of the most frequently stolen vehicles in the UK are ordinary family cars and commercial vans, not exotica. Volume models are targeted precisely because parts are in demand and buyers are easy to find. A work van full of tools is a particularly attractive target.

Myth: a steering wheel lock does the job

A visible physical lock does have deterrent value and is better than nothing. But it is a delay, not a barrier, and any thief equipped to defeat modern electronic security is unlikely to be stopped for long by one.

What happens if I forget my sequence?

The sequence is recorded at installation and can be recovered through a verified process. It is also worth choosing something memorable but not obvious — and not writing it on a note in the glovebox.

Can I still take the car to a garage or valet?

Yes. Service mode lets you temporarily bypass the sequence for a set period or number of starts, so the vehicle can be driven without disclosing your PIN.

Does a tracker drain the battery?

How long does installation take?
